"Providing Care for the behavioral health patient in a non-behavioral health setting.”

This 60 minute session will discuss the challenges faced by healthcare providers responsible for managing the care and treatment of psychiatric patients on medical units  such as the ED, ICU, and medical surgical units.  Focus will be on risk management considerations when providing care to the suicidal patient and those at risk for elopement in non-behavioral health settings.  Discussion will also include information regarding TJC/CMS recent emphasis regarding assessing and mitigating ligature risks with behavioral health patients on psychiatric units within an acute care hospital and psychiatric hospitals.

Objectives:

1. Discuss behavioral health risks in the non-behavioral health setting
2. Understand the appropriate assessment, response, prevention and legal/regulatory concerns associated with ligature risks in the non-behavioral health setting.
3. Discuss TJC/CMS focus on ligature risks in psychiatric units and hospitals.

Presenters:

Catherine C. Bolles, BSN, JD, RN-BC, CPHRM -As Director of Quality and Risk Management at Bristol Hospital, Cathy provides a  critical lens to the area of risk management for the organization. Cathy is a registered nurse with an extensive background in Medical Surgical Nursing, Case Management and  IV therapy.  Cathy stays current with her clinical practice by acting as a nursing supervisor.  Cathy is vital to the insurance reviews and claims, providing clinical, legal and risk advice to the entire system. Cathy's education and credentials make her a valuable resource for the entire organization. She is well respected by her peers in the medical and legal fields. Cathy is a member of the American Society of Healthcare Risk Management [ASHRM] and the Connecticut Society of Healthcare Risk Management [CSHRM]. Cathy earned her BSN from Central Connecticut and her J.D. from Quinnipiac University.  She is certified as a Surgical Case Reviewer for the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program [NSQIP].

Moira K. Wertheimer, Esq., RN, CPHRM, FASHRM, Assistant Vice President, Healthcare and Psychiatric Risk Management Group

As an Assistant Vice President of Healthcare and Psychiatric Risk Management Group, Moira provides educational and other client services to Allied World’s insured medical professional liability policyholders as well as for Allied World’s insured psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners. Moira’ work with these policyholders includes developing individualized action plans designed to mitigate potential loss, taking into account each policyholder’s unique exposures and risk management needs. Moira also assists these clients with ongoing medical educational programs as well as policy and procedure review and development.

Moira holds B.S.N. and J.D. degrees from Georgetown University. Moira is a registered nurse, is admitted to the bar of the State of Connecticut and has received the designation of Certified Professional in Health Care Risk Management. Moira’s past work experience includes working as an attorney in the U.S. District Court in Connecticut and as a registered nurse providing direct patient care in child/adolescent inpatient mental health settings.
